Remember back in 2015-2016 when all the analysists were drooling over a top ten talented linebacker out of Notre Dame. Jaylon Smith was pegged as a top ten pick and sure fire leader of any defense that took him. Things were looking good for Smith until the Fiesta Bowl happened. In a game that should have been an emotional one for Smith turned out being emotional for the wrong reason. In a game that had NFL scouts drooling to watch three potential top 10 picks in Smith, Joey Bosa, and Ezekiel Elliott, both Bosa and Smith went out early In the first quarter, Smith went down with a significant left knee injury.
NFL scouts were scared off by the knee injury due to the fact that Smith would most likely miss the entirety of the next season. Would a team still take a chance on Smith in the first round of talent alone? At the time, there was still talk of the standout linebacker still being worth the pick. However, during the first night of the draft, Smith waited and waited after he heard the likes of Wentz, Bosa, and Elliott. Even after the first night, Smith still did not hear his name called. He had to wait until day two to hear his name called. It was called by none other than the Dallas Cowboys.
Now, a year later, the Cowboys might have one of the best draft classes ever. You could split a hair for the Offensive Rookie of the Year between Dak Prescott and Elliott. Even without Smith, people still consider this draft class as an A+. Now imagine a healthy Smith for a year. The thought is scary.
People close to the Cowboys and Smith are drooling over what they have been seeing from him. He is very close to 100% ready for the season. For now, he has been doing workouts and running full speed. People say they are very impressed with his work ethic and his strength in the weight room. The question still stands whether or not he will be ready for week 1 or not. The Cowboys and Cowboy hopeful will be praying for a healthy Smith on the first week. With Jaylon Smith’s talent and potential, the Cowboys could have another Rookie of the Year on their team, this time on defense.
